Importing dogs and cats to Australia

All animals entering Australia from US, Canada, South America, Africa and Europe require an Import permit issued by Australian Quarantine and Inspection Service (AQIS). Pet Carriers International has a team specializing in Import Pets to Australia. Pet Carriers will organize an Import Permit to Australia for you, to ensure your Pets smooth entry to Australia.

How Long will my Pet be in Quarantine?

The minimum quarantine period for pets entering Australia is 30 days. The ONLY countries which you can import a Pet to Australia without quarantine is New Zealand, Cocos Islands & Norfolk Island.

When Importing Dogs & Cats to Australia please check which category the country comes under to determine the length of Quarantine and the requirements.

Category 1 – New Zealand (No Quarantine in Australia)

Category 2 – Bahrain, Barbados, Cyprus, Falkland Islands, Fiji, French Polynesia (includes Tahiti, Society Islands, Marquesas Islands, Austral Islands, Tuamotu Islands, Gambier Islands), Guam, Hawaii, the Republic of Ireland, Japan, Malta, Mauritius, New Caledonia, Norway, Singapore, Sweden, Taiwan, the United Kingdom, Vanuatu. 

Category 3A - American Samoa , Federated States of Micronesia, Kiribati, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Wallis and Futuna, Western Samoa.

Category 3B - Christmas Island, Cook Islands, Nauru, Niue, Palau, Kingdom of Tonga, Tuvalu.

Category 4 - Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Austria, Bahamas, Belgium, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Brunei, Bulgaria, Canada, Cayman Islands, Chile, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Greece, Greenland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Kuwait, Luxembourg, Macau, Peninsular Malaysia, Monaco, Montenegro and Serbia, Netherlands, Netherlands Antilles and Aruba, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Reunion, Sabah, Sarawak, Seychelles, Slovenia Republic, South Korea, Spain, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent Grenadin, Saipan, Switzerland (including Liechtenstein), Trinidad and Tobago, United Arab Emirates, United States of America, US Virgin Islands, Uruguay.

Category 5 – Republic of South Africa

Category 6 – All other Countries

Cocos Islands - (No Quarantine in Australia)

Norfolk Island - (No Quarantine in Australia)

How much does Quarantine Cost?

The estimated quarantine fees for 30 days on an average is about $800 for one pet.

 

How many Quarantine Facilities in Australia?

Sydney, Melbourne and Perth are the ONLY places which have Quarantine facilities. For further details please visit DAFF Quartine & Export Services

 

How much does the Transport Cost?

When Importing Pets to Australia the transport cost is dependant on the size of your Pet's.

For Example: a cat from Europe to Australia the cost is approximately $2,000.00 AUD

A Labrador would be $3,500.00 AUD. Please note that these are approximate transport costs.

In most cases your pets must be at least 6 months of age at time of export. When importing pets from rabies-free countries they must be at least 12 weeks of age.
